Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Enrollment

  • HWCLI connects Long Islanders with SNAP benefits by assisting with application and enrollment and providing necessary education and outreach through community events at the grassroots level. SNAP provides nutrition assistance to eligible individuals and families. In addition to increasing individuals’ and families’ access to healthy foods, the program provides between $1.73 and $1.79 of investment in local economic activity for every SNAP dollar spent in the community – a stimulus for small businesses.

  • In response to the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) was passed. The act allowed the issuance of emergency allotment supplemental benefits to households who receive SNAP benefits. States issue supplemental emergency allotments of SNAP benefits to households that do not receive the maximum benefit for the household’s size. The amount of the supplement was determined by the difference between the benefit the household would normally receive and the maximum for the household’s size. Starting in April 2021, the United State Department of Agriculture made an adjustment to the supplementation policy and gave permission for the payment of a supplement of at least $95 to all households who receive SNAP benefits.
