Vanessa Baird-Streeter, aged 55, has been officially appointed as the new president and Chief Executive Officer of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island. She succeeds Rebecca Sanin, who recently vacated the position after winning a seat in the Suffolk County Legislature. Chosen from a competitive pool of 60 applicants, Baird-Streeter is set to begin her tenure on February 5.

Proven Leadership and Public Service

Providing a solid foundation for her new role, Baird-Streeter brings a vast reservoir of experience from her previous position as a deputy county executive in Suffolk County. She served in this role from 2012 until the end of Steve Bellone’s term as county executive on December 31. Her tenure marked significant contributions, particularly during demanding periods like Superstorm Sandy, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a cyberattack crisis.

Continuation of a Legacy of Service

Respected for her dedication to public service, Baird-Streeter has been recognized for her relentless pursuit of prioritizing the needs of Long Island’s most vulnerable residents. Her new role at the council, a non-profit entity representing and supporting approximately 200 human service non-profits, is seen as an extension of her commitment to serving the Long Island community. As she steps into this role, Baird-Streeter plans to collaborate closely with the council’s board, staff, and member agencies to chart the organization’s future course.

Endorsement from Peers

Colleen Merlo, chair of the council’s board, expressed her confidence in Baird-Streeter’s leadership capabilities and commitment to Long Island in light of her appointment. Similarly, Sanin, her predecessor, endorsed Baird-Streeter as her successor, expressing trust in her capacity to steer the organization through the challenging times ahead for human services.
