2020 Census Intern

Type: Internship (for credit)
Timeframe: June 2020- August 2020
The 2020 Census is happening right now, and HWCLI is hard at work with our Complete Count Committees working to ensure that every Long Islander knows the importance of being counted next year. The decennial Census affects all of the building blocks of healthy communities – including funding for education, Medicaid, roads & infrastructure, and more – plus it will dictate how many Congressional representatives New York sends to Washington DC. We only have one chance to make sure that our region is fairly and accurately represented in the 2020 Census. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting our communities, we have even more challenges to achieving a Complete Count – but the resources allotted by the Census are more important than ever as we need to lay a solid foundation for our regional recovery.

Key Responsibilities: HWCLI is seeking a 2020 Census team intern to assist with all elements of coordinating the Complete Count Committee. The Census Team Intern will be responsible for:

  • Researching outlets (both locations that are open or accessible, and online platforms) for Census outreach across assigned Census tracts
  • Building connections with key partners to broaden the reach of Census messaging
  • Crafting social media posts & campaigns
  • Monitoring news updates about the upcoming Census
  • General administrative support

Requirements: Candidates must be enrolled in a program for credit and be familiar with Microsoft Office software. Strong writing, research, and interpersonal skills preferred. The ideal candidate will have a passion for civic engagement and communications.
